The duo behind Bin Hero
Here at Bin Hero, we're a father and son team that set out to solve a big problem that plagues many American households on a weekly basis. The problem of spiders and their webs infesting trash bin handles (right where your hands go!) is an incredibly gross one, and, in many cases, a dangerous one.
In our family, the question "who's going to take the trash out?" would strike terror into the hearts of everyone at the dinner table due to the prevalence of venomous Black Widows and Brown Recluse Spiders in the area, because we knew there was always a strong chance of finding one (or at least one of their less-deadly relatives) waiting for us on our trash cans.
"This cannot be just an "us" problem," we said. Curious, we asked family friends and neighbors if they had encountered the same issue. The answer the vast majority of the time was a resounding "Yes!"
With this realization, we began to ponder solving this often unspoken problem in a way that would eliminates any hassle on the user's part and importantly, avoid dangerous chemicals and pesticides. Existing workarounds at the time we began researching included wearing gloves, using a stick or rag to clear webs, or fully washing the can before taking it out. Needless to say, all of these are at best inefficient and realistically fail to actually solve the problem for good.
We wanted a way to actually force spiders to leave the handle area permanently. Considering spiders weave a new web every night, clearing the ones you see at any given time is essentially the same as just postponing your inevitable encounter to the very next night. We could do better, and we became fully fixated on trying.
We were already on the path to solving the issue when we received news from our family friend, Robert.
While taking his trash bins to the curb, Robert was bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider that was hiding in his handle and was seriously hurt. Robert had no idea how dangerous taking out the trash bins actually was until this happened to him! Once bitten, Robert knew he was in trouble. The pain was excruciating, he said—shooting from his fingertip all the way to his shoulder and neck area.
This agonizing pain lasted 3 days. The doctors told him that there is no anti-venom, so all Robert could do was wait it out in serious pain. His doctors informed him that he was one of the lucky ones because unlike some unfortunate victims, he wasn't seriously allergic to this type of venom. Days later, he had recovered, with one exception: his fingertip was missing. It was dissolved by the venom right where he was bitten.
Recalling the story to me: the last thing Robert remembered was grabbing his trash bin handle, and that it was too dark to see the spider. The spider that bit him was hiding just under the handlebar. Robert further explained to me that the Brown Recluse’s venom is designed to dissolve your skin and muscle so the spider can suck it out like a milkshake.
Well, that was all we needed to hear! We were now on a mission to invent an affordable, effective, and permanent solution to stop all types of spiders from making their homes in trash bin handles.
Just under a year later and we were ecstatic when we tested our first working prototype. Now, we are proud to introduce Bin hero, the world’s first patented trash bin barrier that stops spiders and their webs from invading your curbside trash bin! No pesticides, no chemicals, no killing, 100% effective. And with its antimicrobial mesh, it even protects your hands from germs.
